Bij een ongewenste zwangerschap is een gesprek met de huisarts belangrijk, zeker voor vrouwen die nog moeten beslissen of ze de zwangerschap laten voortduren of willen afbreken. Er bestaan geen richtlijnen voor die gesprekken. Onderzoekers van het NIVEL en Rutgers WPF onderzochten de rol van de huisarts bij ongewenste zwangerschappen en pleiten voor een discussie hierover in Huisarts & Wetenschap.

At the UN, Mrs. Maria da Luz Dai Guebuza, the First Lady of Mozambique pleaded for a better availability of female condoms worldwide. She did so by writing her statement on Zawadi, one of many paper dolls. From all over the world these paper dolls came to New York, with statements from men and women asking for female condoms. Afterwards Zawadi flew to the Netherlands. There she, and many more dolls from around the globe, presented them at the UAFC conference on female condoms in November of this year.

Every woman and man has the right to sexual and reproductive health. A growing number of women and men in developing countries have a need for family planning and HIV prevention. The UAFC Joint Programme was set up to answer this growing need and make the female condom widely available. An added advantage of the female condom is that it is woman-initiated. Having more control over their own bodies and sexuality makes women less vulnerable.

The book "Making female condoms available and accessible, a guide on implementing female condom programs" is an important and concrete result of the work of UAFC and its partners.
This Implementation Guide represents the experiences, lessons learned, challenges and successes of the female condom programs of our colleagues in Cameroon, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. These programs are being implemented in very distinct contexts and have been adapted accordingly. Each program has generated new ideas and insights regarding what it means to conduct female condom programming successfully.

Het aantal abortussen wereldwijd is de laatste vijftien jaar niet gedaald en het aantal onveilige abortussen is zelfs gestegen. Dat staat in het rapport 'Induced abortion: incidence and trends worldwide' van de World Health Organisation (WHO) en het Guttmacher Institute. Het gerespecteerde tijdschrift The Lancet publiceerde vandaag (19-01-2012) het rapport.
